That’s right, it’s a giant cow eating dragonworm!
And the Dragon Lord commanding it with his powers to make it wreak havoc and eat villagers muhahahaaaaa…

I made the initial drawing last month in school, the last day before the break.
After that it was laying on my desk for a while waiting for me to finish it until begin this week when I finally decide to start working on it again.
The drawing worked out really well, I hardly had to use my eraser.
It was really nice working on such a big paper, I was bored in school so I started snooping around and found a big pile of A2 papers to use.

It wasn’t an easy task to scan the whole thing, I had to scan it 5 times and then pasting it back together digitally.
And the coloring, well as much as I like to lie and say this is my ‘style’ and what I wanted, it’s not.
I just haven’t got the proper skills or equipment to color it the way I want it.
Maybe someday when I get the money for it I will buy me one of those Wacom Cintiq drawing screens and it will be somewhat easier.

But for now I’ll just have to do with what I’ve got and keep trying to improve my own abilities.

Don’t get me wrong, I personally think it’s a pretty good drawing and the coloring is still ok.

Anyway, here are the cleaned up line drawing and a picture of the drawing process too.

Well… it’s kinda boring,
I already know 95% of what they are trying to teach us, it’s the same content I’ve been getting for the last 6-7 years, and already know for 10-11 years.

I just finished the “catching up” fase for the five people who were good enough to skip the first 3 months, which took two weeks and covered the highlights of the first part in a nutshell.
I hope to learn at least a few new things in the coming months.

The good thing about all this is:

1. I have something (semi)productive to do in the day.
2. There’s a internship attached to it at the end.
3. While I’m there I might as well do some ‘graphic’ work.

And point three made me produce some nice stuff.
I started thinking up some exercises and assignments for myself because I was getting way too bored.
And there’s only So much time you can spend wandering through the Internet(especially when they’ve blocked Facebook & Youtube, GRRRR..).
Here’s one I’ve written down:

” 1 CONCEPT SKETCHES

1a.  Draw 3 concept sketches of  ‘mythological’ creatures/deities.
- Each creature/deity is a leader/god/king of some sort.
- Each C/D has characteristics bound to it’s environment(swamp/ice/mountain/ave/…).
- Each creature has one signature weapon/artifact

1b. Color one sketch.

1c. Make an environment/color study”

Just got the Massive Black: Volume 1 in the mail today!
It was an early Christmas gift from my girlfriend.
It got here really fast too, exactly 7days after I ordered it online, all the way from Australia.

The book is what I expected it to be, filled with great illustrations and concept art from some of the ‘best in the business’.
I really like these kind of books, not so much for inspiration or ideas, because I tend to stay as far away possible from using other peoples ideas so I wouldn’t feel like I’m plagiarizing.
But the interesting thing about books like this is in the motivation they give you.
When I look at those drawings and illustrations I tell myself: “That’s sweet! I wanna draw like that.”
And I try, not always with the best result, but each time I get a little better.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in stuff like this.
It caught my attention after seeing a link in the CGSociety mails I get, another good place for great artwork.

And I added some new images to my portfolio:

Before, it was a slick, very graphic site based mainly on a flash-object with lots of moving parts and even sound.
The problem with this was even though it looked pretty good it was very static.
People couldn’t do anything on it besides look and read.
Because the site was mainly Flash embedded in HTML, it wasn’t very easy to update on a regular basis.
Adding new work to the portfolio meant reworking the .swf object, cropping and resizing images, and then upload the entire thing again.
So the site was being somewhat neglected.

So I decided to remake it and make it more interactive.
Now I’m not that good a programmer so i decide to incorporate (WordPress) in the new design.
Making it possible to post info and being able to get comments.

Also I wanted to make updating my and Marvin’s portfolio easier, so I had to work with PHP.
Now I already knew that this was not going to be easy, my year attending a Bachelor in communication & multimedia design made me realize that I’m more of a designer, not a programmer.
Basic xhtml I could do, but i never could understand much of that PHP gibberish they tried to teach me .
But with a little help from the internet, looking up tutorials,learning some of the basics I already forgot.
And some help from Patrick Lin(Lateralcode.com) to get my portfolio working in php and making it easier to upload files, I managed to do just fine.

The design of the site, well.., I think I must have redone everything about 50times, colors, style, image sizes, background images, etc.
I think it’s at a point now were I can say that it’s ok, good enough to put online.
I know that with time I will redo the overall look, change color’s again and more.

But for now, it’s just fine.
So I hope whoever comes along enjoys it, checks out the portfolios and maybe leaves a comment.
